There is something so special about documenting a family right before everything changes.
For this Newport Beach maternity session, we really wanted to capture what life looks like for this family in this seasonbefore their baby girl arrives and their little boy officially becomes a big brother.
We spent so much of the session chasing him around, playing, snuggling with Mom and Dad, and letting him be himself. I love gently posing and giving families direction when they need it, but I never want a session to feel stiff or like we’re trying to make a toddler stand still and smile the entire time. Some of my favorite photos come from setting you up in a beautiful spot, giving you a little direction, and then letting the moment unfold naturally.
I also love when clients send me inspiration before their session. Christine had so many fun ideas and photos she loved, and we were able to incorporate them throughout the evening while still making everything feel like their family. Inspiration gives us such a great starting point, and then we can let the kids, the light, and the little unexpected moments make the photos our own.
Of course, we made time for beautiful portraits of Christine and her growing belly, photos with her husband, and the more classic family portraits. But we also made space for movement, play, and all the little interactions happening in between.
Because right now, it’s still the three of them.
Soon there will be a baby sister in Mom’s arms, another little hand to hold, and an entirely new rhythm to their days. I wanted this gallery to preserve what their family felt like right before that change.
That’s always what I want my sessions to be a mix of gently posed portraits and the candid, joy-filled moments that happen naturally along the way. Photos that are beautiful, but more importantly, photos that feel like your life.
