In-Home Newborn Session | Lifestyle Newborn Photography in Orange County, CA | TERRA ALYSE Photography | OC Newborn Photographer

There is something I love so much about photographing newborns at home. There’s no rushing out the door, packing up everything your baby might need, or trying to make those first few weeks look like anything other than what they really are.

For this session, their baby was three weeks old and wide awake the entire time—which honestly made the photos that much sweeter. We got to see those tiny eyes taking everything in, all the little expressions, and the way baby already looked so connected to Mom and Dad.

And with a two-year-old and a dog, we definitely weren’t trying to make everything perfectly posed.

We let their toddler come and go, climb up for snuggles, love on the baby, and take breaks when needed. Their dog joined in too, because this season isn’t just about welcoming a new baby—it’s about documenting what life looks like for the whole family now that they’re here.

My approach to newborn sessions is a mix of gentle posing and letting things unfold naturally. I’ll help with where to sit, how to hold baby, and finding the best light in your home, but there is always room for movement, toddler personalities, feeding breaks, diaper changes, and whatever else the morning brings.

I don’t need your baby to sleep through the session. I don’t need your toddler to sit perfectly still. And your home doesn’t need to look perfect either.

Some of my favorite images are the ones that simply document this new rhythm—the way your newborn fits against your chest, your toddler leaning in to get a closer look, your dog nearby, and everyone learning what it feels like to be a family with one more little person to love.

Three weeks in. Wide awake. A little unpredictable. And exactly worth remembering.

That’s what I want your newborn gallery to feel like: your family, at home, in this season.

When Should You Book Your Newborn Session?

I recommend reaching out while you’re still pregnant so we can get your due date on my calendar. We’ll plan for the session to take place during those first few weeks after baby arrives, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with photographing an older newborn either.

Every baby is different, and I don’t believe there is one tiny window you have to fit into for beautiful newborn photos. The goal is to document your family during this season, not to make your baby fit into a certain schedule.

My Best Tips for an In-Home Newborn Session

A little preparation before I arrive can make the morning feel so much easier.

If possible, try to keep baby awake for a little while before our session. A bath right before I arrive can be a great way to do this. Then get baby changed into a fresh diaper and give them a good feeding so they’re cozy and content when we begin.

I also love having Mom slip away for a few minutes at the beginning of the session. This gives Dad some one-on-one time with baby for photos while Mom has a quiet minute to finish getting ready, touch up her hair or makeup, and actually breathe before jumping in front of the camera.

For your home, you do not need to deep clean. I promise. The biggest thing you can do is clear visual clutter from the spaces we’re most likely to photograph in—usually the primary bedroom, nursery, and living room. Clear nightstands, move cords, water bottles, diaper packaging, laundry baskets, and anything else you wouldn’t want showing in the background. Simple spaces photograph beautifully.

And most importantly, don’t worry about everything going according to plan.

Feed the baby if they’re hungry. Let your toddler take a break. Let the dog wander in. We have plenty of time to slow down, gently pose when it makes sense, and let the rest unfold naturally.

Your newborn session doesn’t need to be perfect.

It just needs to feel like your family.
